"What Hard Men Do"

A Story Poem

It is the work that hard men do

that separates them from me and you,

it is the will that hard men have

that elevates them from us too.

It is the why that hard men go

that makes theirs a far different toil,

it is the where that hard men go

that contrasts so with the soil.

It is the elements they bear

that most singles them out,

it is the adversity they share

     that is what they're about.

But they ain't pretty men,

not in the least,

nor are they especially wise,

     but they ain't perfumed men,

     not in the least,

nor are they shy of a lie's size.

Still, it is the work that these hard men do

that separates them from me and you,

still, it is the will that these hard men have

that elevates them from us too.

But they ain't well dressed men,

not in the least,

nor are they really educated,

but they ain't such refined men,

     not in the least,

     nor are they very regulated.

And they're low men among all the fishermen,

and are not that much respected,

and they suck hind tit among all the fishermen,

and are the first to be suspected.

Commercial clammers, that is what these hard men are,

and they're really a cut above the rest,

steady diggers, that is who these hard men are,

and this really makes them the few, the best.
